St Petersburg and the Romanovs The Romanov family ran the Russian empire for over 300 year up till 1917 when their rule came to an abrupt end. Periods of reform were followed by stagnation; uprisings, repression and wars were followed by more peaceful times. We will take you on a walking tour where you will see the Winter Palace (nowadays the mail building of the Hermitage), the Anichkov Palace and the Mikhailovsky Castle (built by Pavel I, hapless son of Katherine the Great). Walking past Marble Palace, our tour will end at the Peter-and-Paul Cathedral inside the Fortress with the same name where all Romanovs were buried. You will learn about the tragic end of the dynasty with a special focus of Russia's last Tsar, Nikolai II.
